Transforming knowledge into practice: Science, technology and innovation in support of the UN SDGs
On Thursday, September 26, 2024, Pensoft will take part in a workshop called Transforming Knowledge into Practice: Science, Technology and Innovation in Support of the UN SDGs, as part of the Science Summit 2024 at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Hand in hand with other European organisations in biodiversity, ecology, and engineering, Pensoft will share ideas on how science, technology, and innovation can be harnessed to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
An abstract for the event is published in the journal Research Ideas and Outcomes (RIO).
Pensoft’s Boris Barov will have a presentation titled "Scholarly publishing in support of open science and SDG realization," where he will discuss Pensoft’s publishing activities and specifically the innovative RIO journal, in which each publication is linked to the SDGs it addresses to help put a focus on the societal impact of research. He will also present the Biodiversity Community Integrated Knowledge Library (BiCIKL) project, which deals with connecting biodiversity research infrastructures.
Barov will also chair a session dedicated to projects connected to the EOSC Association. The European Science Open Cloud (EOSC) was launched by the European Union as the “system of systems” infrastructure where scientists, stakeholders and other types of users can find data, analytical web services, publications, networks and other research resources to carry out their work. Ten EOSC Future science projects have published the results of their work in a topical collection in RIO journal.
Another point of discussion will be the Biodiversity Digital Twins (BioDT), models that mimic behaviour observed in nature and aim to improve our understanding of biodiversity dynamics in response to diverse human pressures . RIO journal has accommodated a topical collection aimed at illustrating the process of prototyping Biodiversity Digital Twins in the BioDT project. In it, each publication is mapped to the relevant SDGs - just like any paper published in RIO.
